Protocol and Reference Model

Networking professional use two networking model to communicate with in the industry-Protocol and the Reference Model.
A Protocol Model provides a model that closely matches the structure of a particular protocol suite. The TCP/IP model is protocol model because it describes the function that occur at each layer of protocol with in the TCP/IP suite.

A Reference Model provides a common reference for maintaining consistency with in all types of network protocol and services. The OSI model is the most widely known Internetworking Reference Model.

The OSI model describes the communication process in details and the TCP/IP model describes the communication process in term of TCP/IP protocol suite and the way it functions. It is important to know details of the OSI model to understand the entire network communication process and to know the TCP/IP model to understand how the process is implemented in current network.

The OSI model is used to reference the process of communication not to regulate it. Many protocols in use today apply to more than one layer of the OSI Model. This is why some of the layers of the OSI model are combined in the TCP/IP model.

The TCP/IP Model

The TCP/IP Model define the four communication function that protocol perform TCP/IP is an open standard, which means that are company does not control it. The rules and implementation of the TCP/IP model were cooperatively developed by member of the industry using Request for Comment (RFC).

Layer of TCP/IP Model

1.Application Layer

Represented application data to the use. for example-the http present data to the user in a web browser application like Internet Explorer.

2.Transport layer

Support communication between devices and perform error correction.

3.Internetwork layer

Find the best path through the network.

4.Network Access

Control hardware devices and media.
