Types of the Network

There are different types of the network describes-

1. Local Area Network-

Local Area Network (LAN) is a network where two or more system are connected together within a single network and it links the devices in a single office depending upon the need of the organization and the technology used. LAN is design to allow resources to share between the computers and workstations. The resources can be hardware like printer, software like application program or data.

LAN is distinguished from other types of network by their transmission media and the topology is used. LAN is made up of network interface cards that fit inside the computers, cable to connect this computer together, protocol software to move data from computer to computer and operating system software to actually service user’s needs for resources like files and printers. We can say a LAN run end-user application.
LAN with the similar architecture are linked by the ‘bridges’ which act as a transfer point and LAN with a different architecture are linked by the ‘gateway’ which convert data when passes between the system.

2. Metropolitan Area Network-

Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) is a network that is design to extend over an entire city. MAN usually provides a backbone which connects several LANs.Many telephone companies provide a popular MAN service called Switched Multi-Megabit Data Services (SMDS).

3. Wide Area Network-

Wide Area Network (WAN) is a network that provides long distance transmission of data, voice, image and video over the large area that may comprises a country or even the whole world. WAN can be classified into the Enterprise WAN and the Global WAN. An Enterprise WAN connect the widely separated computer resources of a single organization, it uses a combination of private and commercial network services but dedicated to the need of the particular organization and the Global WAN interconnect networks of several corporations or organization. Example of Global WAN is INTERNET.
